I try to create opportunities for those taking my courses to apply intellectual skills to their own experience. In some assignments, this might involve simply letting them choose what they write about, while in other instances it might involve integrating research and analysis into a fieldtrip to local site. Several of my courses involve media production or critical writing so I also encourage students to seek audiences beyond the classroom for their work. Putting ideas into action involves more than just meeting course requirements; it only happens when knowledge connects with people's experience.
