Great teachers foster safe learning environments. How do you create a positive climate for learning?

I teach a variety of courses on campus that incorporate museology, First Nations and Métis history, and ethnic studies. The course content has the potential to create controversy, particularly when dealing with minority issues. I create a positive classroom climate in different ways. Mastery and organization of the subject matter is essential, in order to present ideas, answer student questions, and direct class discussion in an authoritative way. Equally important is the recognition that each student brings a unique world view and personal history to class with them. I keep my students’ varied backgrounds in mind when planning and delivering my lectures, when giving assignments, and when mediating class discussions. I try to treat students the way I would like to be treated myself – with respect, with compassion – and with a dose of horse sense and good humor thrown in!
