Great teachers have well-organized courses. What steps do you take to organize your course to facilitate learning?

I particularly enjoy teaching legal thinking to non-lawyers. Most students in the Law and Society program are not heading for law school, where they will get plenty of that. However, learning to "think like a lawyer" at this point will not only give the minority an advantage, but provides all students with an invaluable method of practical attack on problems. Teaching legal thinking involves a sort of organized chaos, since so much of the work is done through spontaneous interaction among various members of the group. My starting point has to be whatever insight arises first. My ending point has to be however far we have managed to feel our way through the material in the time allotted.
