Great teachers involve their students meaningfully in the course. How do you engage your students?
I teach Canadian Studies. This allows a very humanistic approach in terms of both content and methodology. Five elements are essential for a positive learning environment. First, I try to be enthusiastic about Canada, and positive about the learning process. Second, I try to personalize my narrative with relevant anecdotes about Australia (my native country) to draw comparisons and contrasts, and to induce discussion. Third, I try to demystify the big concepts about Canada. I strive to enable students to see "big pictures" through individual interpretive windows. Fourth, I pose questions and invite speculative conclusions where there is no right or wrong answer. Finally, I think Canadian Studies allows a teacher to develop a "oneness" with students in exploring an open ended learning process.
