Great teachers involve their students meaningfully in the course. How do you engage your students?
In a course focused on the key ideas of Western Civilzation, sutdents can be guided to a deeper understanding by way of Socratic discourse. That means there is a constant dialogue in the classroom - dialogue between students and the instructor, as well as between students themselves. There is also an emphasis on role playing where I, as instructor, might impersonate a specific historical character and open myself up to questioning from the students who might be placed in the role of jury, game-show audience, etc. The ideas and issues in question pertain to those of life itself, and in that way students are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences and relate these to subject matter of the course. Because essay and exam questions pick up on these thems, student engagement is an ongoing process.
