Great teachers involve their students meaningfully in the course. How do you engage your students?

I supervise graduate students on their master's or PhD theses. I encourage students to follow their interests since a thesis involves a considerable personal investment, commitment and passion. I encourage students to develop a workplan, I meet them on a regular basis, and try to provide constructive feedback. I also try to bring my graduate students together for informal discussions based on presentations of their on-going work. I encourage them to present papers at conferences and try, whenever possible, to take them along to research workshops with my international collaborators. Through these engagement with research on different levels, I hope they see that research is not just demandingly hard work, which it is; it is exciting, intriguing, provocative, and fun.
