Great teachers communicate effectively with students. How do you ensure that content is presented and communicated clearly?

The important thing about communicating with students is to realize that they have not been working in a specialized area for many years, unlike the teacher. Thus one has to ask oneself "What would I need know to understand the topic if it were a new area of learning for me?" This is usually an easy question for teachers to answer, as they themselves have "over learned" the area. Otherwise they should probably not be teaching it. The trick is not to forget to ask this question in the first place.
